Leak Detector
Leak sensors, also called water sensors or flood sensors, are small smart devices that detect the presence of water where it shouldn’t be — typically near appliances, pipes, or plumbing fixtures — and alert you before serious damage occurs.
How it Works
Most leak sensors use electrical conductivity to detect water. When water bridges the small metal contacts on the bottom of the sensor, it completes a circuit and triggers an alert.
Advanced models may also include:
- Temperature sensors (to detect freezing pipes)
- Humidity sensors
- Probes or extension cables for wider coverage or tight spaces
- Built-in buzzers or sirens
Installation Tips
- Place flat side down so the contacts can touch pooled water.
- Use multiple sensors for wider coverage.
- For tight areas, use remote probes or cable sensors.
- Test regularly with a damp sponge.
- Pair with smart water valves for auto shutoff.
- Track battery levels in your hub or app.
Uses & Ideas
- Send phone notification or alert
- Turn on red lights or sirens
- Pause HVAC system or washer
- Shut off water valve (with paired actuator)
- Log event in smart home dashboard
